austin underway - [taxi pt 2]

What better way to start off the new year than with a new conversion project.  I've been the proud owner of a defunct, but otherwise brilliantly restored, 1971 Austin FX4 London taxi for over a year now.  What seemed like a long shot EV project has garnered incredible support, both moral and financial.  My plan is still to convert this to 100% electric over the coming months and then hire it out in some form to the public so they can experience this "new" form of propulsion.  I'm thinking hotel shuttle, proms, weddings and the like.  My original essay about the project can be found here.

The builder of the motor I've chosen has calculated that the vehicle will be capable of 350 ft-lbs of torque and 165 horsepower.  This is due to the employment of a 1000-amp motor controller, 11.75-inch motor and about 30 kwh of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cells.  The car never had air conditioning but will have both heat AND air on completion.  Satellite navigation and radio are also being investigated.

Check out the video footage and stay tuned for more updates in the coming months.  Everything is tickety-boo!
